Gardening with Limited Space
If you have limited space for gardening, try growing organically via container gardens, square foot gardens or raised bed gardens. These garden alternatives will supply plenty of fresh, organic produce.
"Organic Gardening in Limited Spaces" Apartment dwellers don't give up on having fresh grown herbs, salads, or tomatoes! The least expensive way to grow organic produce is to look for containers that you might be going to throw away or have laying dormant in a closet, for example, an old pair of rubber boots, laundry basket, or clay pots. Just fill them with organic soil and compost, put seeds or plants in them and put in a sunny window sill or on a patio. I just ran across an indoor gardening system called Healthy Gardens™ Hydroponics Kit. I personally haven't tried it yet but it does look very interesting for apartment, patio or balcony gardening.
If you don't have a window sill or patio that has proper sunlight you might try an AeroGarden. This is a self-watering gardening system based on aeroponic technology. It provides a year-round supply of fresh, pesticide-free herbs, salad greens, and tomatoes using organic-based nutrients and just 5% of the water needed for traditionally grown plants. Seed pods grow in an oxygen-rich, humid environment controlled by adjustable grow lights with an automated timing system. Automated alerts let you know when to add food and water. Counter space at a premium? No problem, you can purchase a really attractive wall hanging accessory to hold 1 to 3 systems. This is a great way for anyone to have an indoor garden all year long.
"Raised Bed Organic Gardening" Neat, tidy and very organized is that you? Then, I would suggest gardening organically using raised beds. Not only is raised bed gardening aesthetically pleasing but it provides plenty of organic produce in a smaller, confined space. An even more organized garden concept is Square Foot Gardens. They can be on the ground or in raised beds. Basically you can grow more food with less space. You make a 4 ft by 4 ft bed and section it off into 1 sq. ft sections, each section holds a different vegetable, flower or herb. The vining plants are grown vertically to save space. My favorite books to get you started are Square Foot Gardening: A New Way to Garden in Less Space with Less Work and All New Square Foot Gardening both by Mel Bartholomew. His original book is the best, however the 'All New' version does have some interesting concepts to put into play. Raised bed or square foot organic gardens require less space, less work and less time all the while providing an easier, more foolproof way to grow more organic food.
Once you get the knack of gardening in limited spaces, you can easily grow organic vegetables, herbs, salad greens and beautiful flowers to brighten up your place.
